Terms of Use
Last updated: October 23, 2026
These terms apply when you use Excerp ("we", "our", "the app"). By signing in you agree to them. They sit alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains what information we keep.
Using Excerp
- Excerp is for reading short summaries of technology and business news, and for building skills lists for job roles. It is not directed at children under 13.
- Keep your Google or Apple account secure. You are responsible for what happens under your sign-in.
- Do not misuse the service: no attempts to break it, overload it, collect other readers' information, or get around its limits.
- Summaries are written with the help of an AI model and may contain mistakes. Check the original article before relying on a summary.
Skills lists
- A skills list is made for a job role you choose, and from a job posting if you paste one. It is written with the help of an AI language model and web searches, and it can be wrong, incomplete or out of date. Check anything that matters before you rely on it.
- Each skill in a list is rated STRONG, THIN or MISSING. STRONG means we found two or more links, at least one of them from our library of sources. THIN means one link, or only links found on the web. MISSING means no link yet. Library links come from sources we checked when we added them; web links are found automatically and are not reviewed by us. A rating describes the links we found, not your own skills or what any employer wants.
- A list can carry a note headed THIN EVIDENCE. It means the list was built from fewer than eight similar job postings, and sometimes only from the posting you pasted, so there is less to check it against. The note is about the whole list and is separate from each skill's rating.
- Links lead to websites run by other people. We do not control them and cannot promise they are accurate, safe or still available.
- A skills list is general information to help you plan what to learn. It is not career, hiring, legal or professional advice, and it does not promise a job, an interview or any result.
- Paste only job postings you are allowed to use, and do not paste other people's personal information (names, contact details, résumés). You keep ownership of what you paste; you allow us to store it and send it to the outside services named in the Privacy Policy to build your list.
- We may limit how many lists you can build each day.
Being seen by other readers, and messaging
Two optional features let you connect with other readers. Both are off until you turn them on, and you can turn them off at any time in Profile.
- Show me as reading: when it is on, other readers who have it on can see your display name, industry and interests, and that you saved or verified an article in the last 30 days. They cannot see your email, your Google or Apple account or your reference code.
- Allow message requests: when it is on, other readers can send you a message request. A request is one message. You choose whether to accept it, and if you accept, either of you can reply. If you decline, the sender is not told, and cannot send another.
You must be 18 or older to use these two features. When you turn either on, you confirm that you are, and you accept these terms. If you are not 18 or older, leave them off.
What you may send
- Messages are text only. Links, addresses that look like links, and attachments are not allowed.
- Be respectful. Do not send anything that is harassing, threatening, hateful, sexual, deceptive, or a scam, do not send unwanted promotion or repeated messages to people who have not replied, do not pretend to be someone else or to be part of Excerp, and do not share other people's private information.
- You are responsible for what you send. Do not send anything you do not have the right to send.
Blocking, reporting and moderation
- You can block any reader. Neither of you will see the other afterwards, and they are not told.
- You can report a reader or a message. We keep a copy of what was reported so that we can review it, even if the sender later deletes it.
- We review reports ourselves. We may read a reported message or profile. We do not otherwise read your messages, but they are not end-to-end encrypted, so they can be read by us on our server if that is needed to run, secure or moderate the service or because the law requires it.
- We may remove content, limit or suspend messaging, hide you from other readers, or end your access if these terms are broken or if we think it is needed to protect other readers. We may act without warning when the risk is serious.
- Rate limits apply to messages and requests, to protect readers from spam.
How long messages are kept, and what happens when you delete your account
- Messages are deleted automatically 12 months after they were sent. A request nobody answers within 30 days is closed and can no longer be accepted.
- You can hide a message from your own view at any time.
- If you delete your account, messages you sent stay visible to the people you sent them to, without your name. They show as from a "Deleted account", and are removed when they reach 12 months old. Everything else about you is deleted, as described in the Privacy Policy. Do not send anything you would not want a recipient to keep for that long.
- If a message you received was sent by someone whose account was later deleted, it stays in your inbox the same way.
Your content and our service
- You keep ownership of what you write. By pasting a job posting you allow us to store it and use it as the Privacy Policy describes. By sending a message you allow us to store it and show it to the person you sent it to, and to keep a copy of reported content for review, so the feature can work.
- Excerp is provided as it is. We do not promise it will always be available or free of errors, and we may change or stop features.
Changes to these terms
We may change these terms from time to time. The date above shows the latest version. If a change affects what you agreed to when you turned on visibility or messaging, the app will ask you to confirm again.
